Express YourselfSubmissions for storytellers are now being accepted for the Student Nurse and New Graduate Blogs. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2004The purpose of the Student and New Grad Blog* is to share your first hand stories with your fellow students and new graduates. The blogs will help others learn, cope and understand the reality of what it is to be a nursing student and experience the transition from new grad to Registered Nurse working for the first time. Each story will give insight into today’s nursing profession. *A blog is a journal that is maintained on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and the storyteller is a "blogger." Blog EntriesEach blog should not exceed 250 words. The entries are to be specific with detail and reflect reality. Whether it’s clinical, classroom, a patient care experience, or a bad day, each represents a day in the life of our blogger and therefore is an opportunity for peers to identify and be able to breathe a sigh of relief and think ‘it’s not just me!’ Blog entries will be posted on chooseNursing.com twice a month for a one-year period. Student Bloggers will be identified by:

Example BlogJuly Finished the first week of my orientation and it wasn’t scary, but boy, was it intense. It feels great to finally be able to write ‘RN’ after my name! I worked so hard and so long for this. It still doesn’t seem quite real! I’m pretty nervous about being on my own, but that’s still a few weeks away. My preceptor is great. I really appreciate the patience he has and the time he is taking to mentor me. The patients I’ve had so far have been awesome. The first one was admitted with signs and symptoms of asthma exacerbation. She was anxious, SOB (short of breath), I could hear her wheezing before I placed my stethoscope to auscultate, and she had an O2 sat of 80%. I immediately checked all her vitals, placed her on O2, rechecked her saturation, implemented my unit standards and protocols for asthma, and notified the physician. Once stabilized I could see the relief on her face and I was so proud. This is just one example of patient care I provided. At the end of the day I really knew I had made a difference. Can’t wait to tell you about tomorrow. Check back. Zora The Student Blogger will receive:
