Make friends and have fun

Nursing is a lot of fun. Being able to get along with people and good communication skills are important qualities for life. Most nurses will tell you that they have made life-long friends while working as a nurse. That’s because nurses work as a team. They help each other and they teach one another new skills. There are abundant opportunities to meet wonderful people who want to make a difference in the world. So, is nursing for you? The answer is YES.

Have unlimited opportunities

Many exciting and rewarding opportunities exist in nursing.

Nurses can make choices about where they work and the types of patients they care for.

Nurses have choices beyond hospital nursing. Clinics, surgery centers, schools, large companies, colleges, and rehabilitation centers are just some of the areas where nurses work.

If you want to be the boss, nursing has a place for you as well. Nurses are:

    Managers
    Executives
    Entrepreneurs
    Lawyers
    Government officials
    Educators

Nursing can take you anywhere. Nurses work with the police in forensics departments, on movie sets, as flight nurses in the military, and as legal consultants. Many nurses choose to focus on community health by becoming case managers or visiting nurses (nurses that go out to patient’s homes).

Travel the world

Nurses can use their skills anywhere in the world. That means you can travel and earn money at the same time.

Nurses work on cruise ships, and some accompany patients that are too ill to travel alone. Travel nurses trek all over the world. They fill long- and short-term nursing assignments. The military and the Peace Corps are other examples of ways nurses can see the world.

Be a professional

Nursing, it’s not just a job, it’s a profession.

A profession is any job where you need specialized knowledge and training. Nursing combines science and technology with people skills like: communication, problem solving, teaching, and compassion. As a nurse, you will touch people’s lives at a time when they need help.

The variety of opportunities for nurses is endless. A nurse can earn a competitive salary and work anywhere in the world. Nurses can specialize in the same way doctors do in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics (caring for the elderly), emergency medicine, etc. With advanced education, nurses can become independent clinical specialists like nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists or nurse practitioners.

Nursing is one of the most respected professions in the world. Nursing is expected to grow faster than all other occupations through 2008 (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics). In other words, there will always be jobs for nurses.

Be intellectually challenged

Nursing is referred to as a career that is both "high-tech" and "high-touch." It is based upon sound education and a caring heart.

"High-tech"
Nurses use computers, heart monitors, respirators and other specialized equipment in the course of doing their jobs.

"High-touch"
Nurses work closely with their patients, providing compassionate hands-on care and emotional support.

    Sound nursing education includes:
Understanding anatomy and physiology of the body
Knowledge of drugs and their side effects
Modern techniques of treatment and rehabilitation
    Communication and teaching

All of this knowledge allows nurses to meet the demand of providing optimal care to their patients.
