Nursing Scholarship Awarded

Sheri Hurtado says it took her about three years to complete her prerequisites. A third year student at California State University at Long Beach , she will graduate with her BSN degree in December 2007.

Sheri has been around nursing all of her life. Her mother practiced nursing for 37 years before retiring and in some ways Sheri says her mother inspired her. “I have always had an affinity for math and science and I knew I wanted to be in the medical field,” says Sheri. "Nursing is a great fit for me, because I can go wherever I want and have job security."

Sheri’s biggest barrier is a financial one. She says because her time outside of school is so limited, there’s no time to work. “This program is great and the administration works hard to help you stay in the program.” She says she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Although Sheri isn't currently working, she is no stranger to work. She tutored math for nine years at all levels including the collegiate level. She also teaches SAT prep courses to juniors and seniors as well as conducts other types of testing prep for 7th and 8th graders.

Sheri offers this advice for incoming nursing students: "Be financially stable or be prepared to take out student loans." Other options are to check with hospitals for scholarships and forgivable loan programs.

Sheri’s area of interest includes ER and Critical Care. Her plan is to go back and get her Masters degree in order to teach.

Congratulations Sheri!
