Nursing Scholarship Awarded
Sometimes we aren't sure of our direction when we enter college. Then there are those times when something catastrophic happens and our fate is sealed. Anh Luc admits that choosing a major was difficult for her and thought she wanted a business major. Then her parents became ill and she became their caregiver. She realized then what she wanted to do was become a geriatric nurse. Anh must balance school, family and work--a tall order because of her rigorous class schedule. She says when she needs to talk to someone about her problems she talks to her mentor. She tells a story about her grandmother who was visiting from Texas. Her grandmother who had been diagnosed with diabetes needed to take her insulin twice a day. However, because the family didn’t know how to give her the insulin shots, her grandmother decided to skip her shots. It was Anh who suggested that they learn how. As a result, her father made an appointment with his doctor and the nurse taught him how to give the shots to his mother. For Anh it’s all about helping others and learning about who you are. “I’m very happy about my choice,” says Anh, “and I want to inspire others to become nurses.” “It’s important to study hard and work as little as possible because nursing is hard and you need full concentration,” says Anh. A third year student at San Jose State University, Anh will graduate in Spring 2008. Her long-term goals include finishing school, having a family, and going back for her Masters Degree. Her scholarship money will go towards buying books, and she looks forward to quitting her part time job so that she can concentrate on school. Congratulations Anh!
